Meet CO*LAB's Lantern Artist, Gabrielle (Gabs) deGouw !

Known for her work at the Deep Freeze: Byzantine festival, Kaleido Family Arts Festivals and GLOW: Spring Equinox Festivals, Gabs has dedicated the last 5 years to lantern design. Travelling to Aomori Japan to research traditional lanterns she continues to implement techniques from around the world while cultivating her own unique style. Her personal work focuses on bringing a feeling of belonging, comfort and joy to the viewer through her whimsical design language.

“Quarters Arts was my origin story in lanterns. I started working with them 6 years ago when the organization was working out of community leagues and revitalized buildings. Now they have a beautiful building CO*LAB, designed specifically for giant projects. It seemed fitting for a Mammoth sized project to be the first lantern created here. Without their generosity this project would not have been possible at its current scale.”
